Do you want to gain valuable insight into the world of health and social care, shadowing people working with children and young people with complex learning disabilities? Then ELHAP is the place for you. ELHAP offers work experience placements to local schools and colleges throughout the year for between 1 day up to 2 weeks

Work experience, here, is about supporting disabled children, young people, and adults to have a meaningful and engaging day, giving them the safe space to experience the world in the way that suits their needs.  This involves playing adventurously: being out in nature, getting muddy, and working with a team of like-minded individuals.  

We put people at the centre of everything we do. 

By choosing to undertake work experience at ELHAP, you are not only experiencing what it is like to work in a dynamic and ever-changing environment, but becoming a part of our ethos, taking the first steps into learning how to care for people with a complex learning disabilities in a friendly environment, understanding the skills required for a range of positions, including but not exclusive to medicine, nursing, physiotherapy, social work, teaching, psychology, psychotherapy etc.


We organise the work experience placements to enable you to develop a range of the following skills, knowledge, and experience:   

Skills

  • Increase self-confidence and self-esteem, especially when dealing with new people. 

  • Develop vital social interaction and communication skills to communicate with people with disabilities, such as nonverbal children and adults 

  • Increase empathy 

  • Improve teamwork skills 

  • Problem-solving and creativity. No two people are the same, and as such, no one solution fits all circumstances. By working at ELHAP, you will learn how to creatively come up with solutions to problems, adapt to different situations and respond effectively 

  • Risk assessment and decision making 

 

Knowledge

  • Better understanding of the needs of children, young people, and adults with disabilities. 

  • Increased knowledge of the importance of play in children’s lives as well as meaningful and fulfilled days for adults with disabilities.  

  • Understanding the role of playworkers 

  • Understand what services ELHAP provides. 

Experience

  • Working with children, young people and adults with complex disabilities 

  • Helping children with disabilities play adventurously and reach their potential in an inclusive environment 

  • Supporting adults with disabilities to access a range of educational and recreational opportunities 

  • Working as a member of a team 

  • Experience of working in physical, social, and sensory spaces 

  • Experience in playwork and social care.
